The persuasive nature of conflict, insecurity and under-development in the post cold war period has had far reaching implications for peace and development in Africa. In Africa today, the number of people with limited resources is on the increase. Wars and internal conflicts are devastating lives, creating millions of refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The failure of many African states to provide human security, and sustainable development, the increasing marginalisation of Africa by forces of the globalisation; the ineffectiveness of Western approaches to the management and resolution of African conflicts, the growing reluctance of the West to intervene in Africa conflicts and the collapse of traditional conflict management mechanisms have all made necessary the development of innovative conflict resolution mechanisms suitable for African's socio-cultural environment.

The Centre is therefore a response to the need for developing new and responsive conflict resolution mechanisms as well as training a core of African practitioners with the intellectual and practical skills to prevent and manage conflicts in Africa.

Unlike other institutions in Africa, The Centre for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies for the first time seeks to address the interface between peace, sustainable development and conflict.

The main course objectives are as follows;

  • Creating an understanding of what conflict is and its effects on development.
  • Training a body of professionals in the field of peace and sustainable development.
  • Promoting an understanding of wider security issues and its impact on development.
  • Advancing in-depth understanding of the meaning, strategies and processes for achieving peace and sustainable development.
  • developing students' competence in research, analyses and creative thinking.

Graduates of this program will be competent to practice as mediators, conflict analysts and development practitioners or consultants and able to fulfill the conditions for Chartered Mediators of Nigeria.

The real value of any course lies in its faculty. The Centre of Peace and Sustainable development has worked hard to ensure that the faculty are all highly skilled, highly knowledgeable and highly experienced in their taught fields. Furthermore the faculty has been brought together from all over the Africa continent and beyond.

They come from a wide range of backgrounds that includes, academics, NGOs, the private sector, the government, the military and think tanks or research bodies. This broad type of exposure is what guarantees students that not only will they leave the course with an in depth understanding of Africa today and the challenges it faces but that they will also leave with a greater capacity to meet these challenges and facilitate change.
